Louis Legrande
Louis Rochelle Legrande, also known as Louis de Beaumont or Louis II, is the current King of Cleyr.
Name
Louis is almost always referred to as Louis Rochelle by those close enough to refer to him without titles or honourifics, but Rochelle is not his surname. Rather, Rochelle is his middle name, in honour of his mother Lady Rochelle. His surname is Legrande after the epithet of his ancestor Richard Legrande, but it would also be valid to refer to him by his toponym "de Beaumont". Some mistakenly refer to him as Louis de Clair or Louis de Montclair, but this is not accurate as a name only as a title in context of international relations.
Titles
Louis Rochelle holds the following titles in his own right:
- King of Cleyr ( Roi de Montclair ) - My Lord Marquess ( Marquis-Monseigneur ) - Marquess of Montclair ( Marquis - General ( Général )
His full title with epithets and honourifics as used in official styling and annoucements is:
Très Puissant Majesté Marquis-Monseigneur Louis Rochelle Legrande de Beaumont, le Roi de Mont-Clair, l'Ours, l'vanqueur de myriade chevaliers, l'souverain de Bernicia, Deira, et toutes l'pays de la nord, mangeur d'alves.
Land Claims and Disputes
In addition to his undisputed claim to Montclair and his lands held by fealty of other Marquesses, he claims some land in the northeast of Lugal which had been only sparsely populated before a large migration of Cleyrans there, but has not pursued the claim as he is unwilling to lose a necessary ally or gain a powerful enemy in the armies of Lugal. He also claims all land north of Lugal, but has no means to properly enforce this claim. As an extension of wars with the elves, Deira and Bernicia have made claims to the south of their official borders which Louis claims by right of the oath of fealty made by their respective Marquesses. However, the Marquess of Bernicia disputes this on grounds of the oath being one of deference in manners of legislation and jurisprudence, mutual military aid and alliance, and on taxation and tribute for the lands held by Bernicia at the time the oath was sworn, but not any lands gained by Bernicia in Conquest, which the Marquess of Bernicia argues are his sole property with exclusive rights of taxation and equal right of jurisprudence. The Marquess of Deira expresses a similar attitude, but is not in a position to press the matter and has ceded both new and old land directly to the crown of Montclair in exchange for continued military aid against the elves. The Marquess of Bernicia also has overlapping claims in northeastern Lugal with some of the Cleyrans there swearing fealty to him and some to Louis. There have been attempts by Louis to consolidate the claims of Bernicia and Montclair by means of arranging a marriage between one of his daughters and one of Henry's sons, but the Marquess of Bernicia refuses to accept the inheritance terms proposed by Louis. This is further complicated by the fact that Aymeric Deschamps, who Louis's daughter Matilda favours most strongly has no desire to marry until he has had his fill of adventure.
Family
Louis's mother, Dowager Queen Rochelle had eleven sons, of whom Louis is the second and oldest surviving. His older brother Richard died in battle before having any children. Even before Richard's death, Louis had been favoured to rule by his father and by the general populace due to his incredible stature, prowess in battle, sharp wit, and noteworthy determination, which has lead some to believe that Louis saw to his brother's death in battle to prevent a succession dispute if his father had named Louis heir, but Louis and his family vehemently deny all claims that he had any hand in his brother's death.
