Cleyran
Cleyrans are a species of sapient ratfolk comparable in size and behaviour to humans. They have existed in Kalom for millenia, but only recently have they begun to have their time in the sun. Much of their history is lost due to repeated attempts by other races at genocide of their kind and even in the present they are still viewed as vermin by many.
They are known by many names, but "Cleyran" is becoming the preferred demonym of most Kalomians of their species as it has the most positive connotation representing their biggest success in all of recorded history. Many other names for them are derogatory to some extent, but some are tolerated or accepted as alternatives. Some names refer to a specific group of Cleyran or Cleyrans aligned with specific factions or powers.
Names used by Cleyrans to describe Cleyrans:
- Les Désespérés - "The Desperates" - A name commonly used by Cleyrans who are seeking to journey north seeking asylum in the Cleyr Marches.
- Grognards - "Grumblers", "Complainers" - A name applied by Cleyrans to other Cleyrans who are disillusioned with the dream of reaching Cleyr.
- Gringalet -
- Gremzieur -
- Grincheur -
- Rongeur - "Rodent" - Considered a neutral term for use in describing their kind.
Names used by others to describe Cleyrans:
- Francach - "Rats" - The name used to describe them by Wood Elves. Usually considered fairly positive outside of Cleyr.
- Szczur - "Rats" - The name used to describe them by Mierish speakers.
- Gabaruwan - "Ratfolk" - Lugalin used to describe them.
- Radanadarim - "Gnawing eaters" - A fairly neutral Dwarvish term used to describe them, also sometimes is punned as Duradandadarim - "Beard-bodied mortals" - especially in the Dwarven tongue twister poem "e-Duradandadarim nish neshdet zazadost dadalel kadot nalish ïssun udveksl" - "The [Cleyrans] give gems that last forever for rotten silks."
