He was very scared and when he came in, he brought his family and they haven't left the Morgenstern Manor since then, so Uncle's very worried. She begins to formulate questions to ask this uncle while we continue to our destination. GeigerCounter (GM):After a few more turns and more of the same in terms of the locals talking, they group passes by an alleyway where nearly forty kobolds in slightly ragged clothes are lounging around talking in Draconic. Many of them go silent as they notice the party and stare at them silently as they pass, Renith Riverhold:(Not sure its been said but seeing as we are walking through town.. what makes up the majority of the population) (dragon alley) GeigerCounter (GM):Dark-haired humans are the visiible majority, but kobolds outnumber them technically, they just aren't often as publicly visible, which is why the kobold alley is noteworthy enough to notice. There are some lighter haired humans and elves both light haired and dark. There are also some dwarves and drow, but not many and anything else is probably a traveler such as yourselves and rare enough to be of note. The humans seem to avoid the drow a bit, especially with the murder rumours. Renith Riverhold:(kobold slums, dangerous and trap filled) GeigerCounter (GM):( Maybe, maybe. But if nobody speaks draconic - and iirc nobody with the party rn does, then we're moving on. ) Denon F.:(I can speak.....Common and Dwarvish) (Lol) Renith Riverhold: LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY Elven, common, halfling GeigerCounter (GM):Mordechai finally leads you to a fairly impressive stone building, about three floors high with a stained glass window of a bright star. There is an inscription chiseled in stone above the entrance in Common, Mierish ( another human language which is the native language here ), and Elvish that reads, "Morgenstern & Sons: Men at Arms and Securities Company". As he leads you through the dark-stained oaken doors you enter into a carpeted foyer with two staircases leading to a landing on the second floor and two more leading to a third. Mordechai tells the guardsmen that he has brought who his Uncle is looking for and they nod at him. He leads you up both flights of stairs and knocks on the door. A booming voice answers in Mierish and Mordechai responds, then translates into Common and says, "You can go in." You all enter in to a nicely furnished office. A man who looks about 60 sits at a sturdy looking desk and reclines in a comfy but heavy chair. A guard relaxes in a wooden chair by the bookshelves while another stands behind the man. An elderly tabaxi wizard is crouched by a wooden globe that rests in a stand that holds it about three feet from the floor and is turning it slowly examining it with curiosity and slight amusement. The elderly man's expression is grave and before his desk stands the kobold you met the other day and shared food with before he ran off. Iskir and Teddy both take a spot on one of the two sofas by the walls, Iskir resting an arm on his axe which he has propped up by the handle. Teddy seems relatively relaxed. Renith and Vargyr remain standing for the moment and approach the desk as the elderly man beckons them forward. Janusz Morgenstern:Salutations, I am Master Janusz Morgenstern. I will not, but I would have them be safe. Nor are these the first reports of such. There have been rumours but few know the truth of it. People have gone missing in the woods, in the caves, and in the city. This is not completely unusual. The caves claim at least a few travellers every year and there is always risk of beasts and brigands in the forest. But the city is usually a safe haven. We have crime, yes. Kidnappings, as well. But it's rarely murder and nothing the town guard cannot resolve. Renith Riverhold:sounds like the town guard are falling behind if you are interested in hiring mercenaries to solve the problem.. Janusz Morgenstern laughs at this Janusz Morgenstern:I knew you were new here. Nearly all the guardsmen are mercenaries. It is a good business and there's healthy competition, but our company is clearly the best in the city with clients throughout the kingdom. But... You see... This has been a particularly busy year. There have been raids in the east again, but all the while more and more have been flocking here to try and find their fortunes in the caves of the Scar. Worse still and why I have a particular interest in this, my own son Kostek has disappeared... This is not the work of a common criminal. My elder son Casimir has been searching and cannot attend to business for worry for his brother. The whole family is affected and it does not do for us to let a competitor rescue him. "so has any information come forward like a ransom, or have any of your "healthy competition" changed their activities as of late?" Janusz Morgenstern:None. That's what concerns me. Kidnapping is not usually done on grown men and is most often done for a ransom by a typical thuggish lout who just needs some coin. We are not above paying a ransom if it is kept secret. To hear nothing for weeks and there having been no body... Renith Riverhold:This missing person is of course affecting your business and thus your bottom line, naturally it might have something to do with your competitors as well as any enterprising local wanting to make a coin the illegal way if you have paid ransom in the past, it means you are willing to do so again and again.. have you investigated the previous perpetrators? Janusz Morgenstern:It would be an unusual thing for legitimate competition to do. We have to respect rule of law to uphold it and what is done to us would be met with retaliation if it were done by other legitimate companies. We have been policing the streets as best as we can and have already questioned the local criminal elements. We have even sent out spies amongst the kobolds and asked the clergy of that Drow temple. No new drow has come up from the Underdark that we know of, but that would be my most reasonable suspicion at this point. Janusz Morgenstern turns again to Vargyr Janusz Morgenstern:As per what you can do for me. I have a job that needs doing and not enough men to spare. This hear catfolk man is a very honoured guest. He is here to research a particular cave in the Scar which is famous for having large quartz crystals which glow increasingly bright until a full moon. I do not see it as more than a curiosity, myself, but it is of interest to students of the Arcane, or so he says. Efra Mews:Well how does the adage go? "Curiosity made glad the cat"? I believe it is a natural magical wonder and I am categorizing those for my latest encyclopedia on commission of the Princes of Lugal. Janusz Morgenstern:To the point: He needs an escort into the caves to conduct his research safely. There have already been two parties of curiosity seekers who have gone missing in the caves. They are near the surface and had been one of the safer caves before now. Renith Riverhold:I suppose this will gain you a bit of income needed to sustain the continued search for your lost loved one, but we are, as you put it, mercenaries. The crystals there glow with a purple light by some unknown magics tied to the moon cycle and it was an important place to worshippers of Selune for that reason. I suppose they thought that it was the blessing of Selune that illuminated the cave, but I have other ideas. Anyway, it's been abandoned for some time and no one seems to know why. It's been the play-place of adventurers. Ah if I were just 40 years younger, I'd go there by myself to brave it because it sounds like an excellent addition to my travel diary. It's quite extensive, you know. I suppose even tired old eyes can write about exciting places. If I'm not mistaken, aren't you a Cleric of Selune yourself? Renith Riverhold:well whats the dimentions of the area we are standing in GeigerCounter (GM):You're in an open field, you just climbed up the wall of a canyon. The entrance to the cave would be able to be sealed by Leomund's, but Leomund's has a range of Self, so he would indeed have to climb back down to cork it. There's also a river within sight that flows down into the canyon. Renith Riverhold:hmms.. do you need two hands to cast it? and is it a dome or a sphere? might just do it half way down the rope.. at the very least your not in arms reach of the zombies and if they choose to climb, it would be very challenging one at that.. GeigerCounter (GM):It's a dome. Doesn't specify if it's one or two hands, but it's got somatic components. Also... I just checked and I don't think this idea will work RAW because if you leave the spell's area it's supposed to dissipate. But... I'm gonna rule of cool it. That said, we're basically at the end of the session. So we'll just say that Iskir and Renith go with him and he casts it and that's that and you return to the surface. Renith Riverhold:Iskir, you managed to climb the rope, holding a near dead guy and managed to hammer pitons into the rock wall.. do you think you can show the wizard how to hold the rope with his legs so that he can cast.. I am leaning towards perhaps an infectious zombie zombie rather than a necromancer.. though perhaps the necromancer made it and lost control of it and became a zombie himself.. Iskir:An interesting theory Renith Riverhold:which would make the zombie outbreak infinantly more dangerous to the population and we are low enough level that curses still have their punch.. as I dont have access to remove curse and removing the curse on all the zombies could either keep them dead or bring the kobolds back to life for a happier if trauma induced ending GeigerCounter (GM):Lol.
