Nikkal

Nikkal of Lugal is a controversial Queen of Lugal whose legacy is a matter of complexity for Lugal, with most praising some aspects of her reign even while regarding her as a despotic tyrant. Her most notable act was an attempt to be deified, which ultimately failed when she died at the age of 110. She ruled in her own right for nearly 85 years after the death of her father Lugal-Bazi from illness. ( Most likely a venereal disease which rendered him infertile. ) Nikkal of her own council arranged a marriage with the Mierish nobleman Liske in order to acquire lands in what was then northern Mier and to supplement her military power with Mierish calvary. She warred very aggressively with the High Elven kingdoms to the east of Lugal and made threatening gestures towards the Cleyrans, as well as implementing one of the few periods of elven persecution in Lugalin history. She commissioned dozens of temples and founded a cult which was outlawed by her successor, who set about reversing most of her policies in general and making amends with the kingdoms surrounding Lugal. Her marriage was unhappy and she was widely known to have committed adultery many, many times, even publicly, but forced her husband to acknowledge all of her children as his legitimate heirs and adopt them under threat of execution. There are also rumors that she condoned and even committed child sacrifice, but it was never proven in her lifetime and the accusations were buried with her as the country simply wanted to move on. It is said by some - even among the royalty of Lugal - that after her death she became a fiend and it is by her and another fiend that her cult were able to manifest miracles.

Positive Legacy

Nikkal commissioned thousands of important building projects throughout Lugal and was an extensive patron of schools of warmages. Only a few of her more self-centered building projects were ever torn down. ( With the golden statue of herself as a fertility goddess being melted down and minted into coins announcing the ascension of Lugal-madi, with many being sent to surrounding kingdoms as a gesture of goodwill. )
